Who We Are

Athens Concussion & Neuropsychology Center is committed to delivering the highest standard of neuropsychological testing in Northeast Georgia. We endeavor to work closely with our patients, families, and their physicians.

We specialize in the evaluation of sport-related concussions, stroke, Alzheimer's disease/dementia, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, and other medical or psychological conditions that cause cognitive changes.   Testing can determine whether the brain has returned to its healthiest metabolic state.  Especially in the case of prolonged recovery from concussion, testing can identify confounding factors such as anxiety; predict the course of recovery; and help inform return-to-play decisions.

Testing can identify weaknessses in specific areas.  It is very sensitive to mild memory problems that might not be obvious in other ways.  For example, testing helps determine whether memory changes are normal age-related changes or if they reflect a neurological disorder.  Testing might also be used to identify problems related to medical conditions that can affect memory and thinking, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, or kidney disease.

What Will the Results Tell Me and My Physician?

Results can be used to help differentiate among illnesses, which is important because appropriate treatment depends on accurate diagnosis.  Different illnesses result in different patterns of strengths and weaknesses.  Therefore, the results are helpful in determining which areas of the brain might be involved and what illness might be operating.  For instance, testing can help to differentiate among Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and depression.  Your physician will use this information along with the results of other tests, such as brain imaging and blood tests, to determine the most informed diagnosis possible.

Research shows how scores on specific tests relate to everyday functional skills, such as managing money, driving, or readiness to return to work.
