Who We Are
Athens Concussion & Neuropsychology Center is committed to delivering the highest standard of neuropsychological testing in Northeast Georgia. We work closely with our patients, families, physicians, schools and educators.
We specialize in the evaluation of sport-related concussions, stroke, attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder, learning disorders, and neurodegenerative disease.
Testing can determine whether the brain has returned to its healthiest metabolic state. Testing can identify other contributing symptoms such as anxiety; predict the course of recovery; and help inform return-to-play decisions.
Testing might also be used to identify problems related to medical conditions that can affect memory and thinking, such as diabetes, cardiovascular disorders, or kidney disease.
What Will the Results Tell Me and My Physician?
Results help with precise and accurate diagnoses. Different illnesses result in different patterns of strengths and weaknesses. Therefore, the results are helpful in determining which areas of the brain might be involved and what illness might be operating. For instance, testing can help to differentiate among Alzheimer's disease, stroke, and depression. Your physician will use this information along with the results of other tests, such as brain imaging and blood tests, to determine the most informed diagnosis possible.
Research shows how scores on specific tests relate to everyday functional skills, such as managing money, driving, or readiness to return to work.
Test for concussion and evaluate for other causes of cognitive difficulty, such as learning disabiliies, dyslexia, ADHD, etc. Dr. Piedmont assesses and manages concussions in the context of return to sport, school accommodations, and all of the unexpected changes that occur with this acute but "silent" injury.
Our neuropsych testing reports provide diagnoses from a licensed clinical psychologist and detailed recommendations for school support. Dr. Piedmont works with families to provide their children's school administration with necessary documentation to address learning problems at any age.
We are a specialty practice and you may have been referred by your primary care doctor or another specialist, such as your neurologist. Our Center is committed to communicating with all providers regarding results and treatment plans in order to ensure streamlined and efficient continuity of care.
Traumatic Brain Injury
Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a condition that can occur in various situations and affect people in many different ways. Our assessments are focused on (1) identifying the mechanism(s) of injury; (2) documenting the details of events that lead to such injury; (3) evaluating the nature and extent of brain injury; (4) helping individuals and their families understand how the injury may affect daily functioning; (5) developing targeted treatment plans to maximize efficiency of therapeutic efforts; and (6) determining necessary levels of care and independence.
Dr. Piedmont will meet with you to discuss results in depth approximately three weeks after your testing appointment. Family and close friends are encouraged to join to understand your results and treatment plan, as well as assisting you to process results emotionally and make informed decisions.
